What: Pata Negra, probably my all time favorite restaurant in Amsterdam

Where: They have two locations, one on the Utrechtsestraat 124 and one at the Reinwardstraat 1 (the one I prefer!)

Happy: Whoah, happy would be some sort of understatement. Eating here makes you euphoric and overjoyed! They serve the best tapa in Amsterdam, starting with their to die for alioli with bread. Patats bravas, berenjenas y calabacin fritos, albondiga's, queso frito, yum yum yum. Predominantly Spanish staff, great music and a big can of sangria: close your eyes and you’re in Barcelona. 

Money business: Count around €20/€25 per person

What: I love Vintage, a fancy vintage store with a modern twist

Where: Prinsengracht 201.

Why: They sell the perfect combination of second hand clothes and new clothes with a vintage (like '20, '30 or '70) vibe. You can also find great shoes, bags and handmade jewelry. I love Vintage also has a web shop which you can visit on a screen in their boutique. Pick the items you like and they get them for you out of their stock. That puts online shopping in a different perspective!

Très spécial: I couldn't take a picture of the back of the shop, so another reason for you to go check out their store and find out why I couldn’t..

What: a perfect Friday evening meal

Where: at Perla, a wood oven pizza place in the center of the Jordaan, located at the Tweede Tuindwarsstraat 14

Why: because they absolutely make the best pizza in Amsterdam. They get their mozzarella di bufala fresh out of Napoli two times a week and their tomato sauce is just perfect. It’s always crowded and you always have to wait for your pizza, but I assure you it’s totally worth waiting for.

More: there’s only one big table inside the ‘restaurant’, but you can also eat the pizza on your lap outside or sit at the windows (and read the Italian Vogue along with a Pèrrier Citron, woopwoop).

What: Vapiano, the place for fast and casual dining in Amsterdam

Where: Oosterdokskade 145, near Amsterdam Central Station

Money business: You have to pay with a 'chip card': everything you order is put on a card and when you leave the restaurant you hand in your card and you pay the bill. A pretty small bill too actually, since you pay around €8,00 for pasta's and pizza's, €4,50 for a glass of wine and about €7,00 for some antipasti. Uh-oh, did I just created a new favorite cheap-and-easy-dining-place?

And for all you Einzelgängers out there: It’s also the perfect hang-out for when you’re alone. It’s spacious bit still kinda cozy and always busy. Easy blending in!

And..: they serve delicious Illy coffee!

Where: Ferdinand Bolstraat 10

Why: the best place for de-li-ci-ous cakes in Amsterdam! **Try the Zweeds Prinssengebak or their Chocolate Slutt Pie**

Happy: Definitely!Their cozy interior, the collection of amazing cakes exposed in their store, and the friendly staff: all the ingredients for a perfect afternoon tea.

Familiar name: The man behind De taart van m’n tante is Siemon de Jong, the confectioner from the tv-program Taarten van Abel.

Cupcakes in Amsterdam #3

The Darling, Runstraat 4, Amsterdam

Yes, another favorite is born! This boutique located in the Nine Streets in Amsterdam is a little girl’s dream coming to life. The combination of vintage and new items in the shops looked great, but I must admit I had my mind set on just one thing: cupcakes and tea! So we sat down at a cute table upstairs and looked around. Even if you’re sad, down or grumpy, you can’t leave this place without a smile on your face (well.. maybe men can ha-ha). And we order tea and cupcakes, a vanilla- and a rose flavored one to be exactly. Not only did they taste amazing, they looked fabulous as well. The Darling gets her cupcakes from The Queens of Tarts, which have their own atelier in Amsterdam.

The perfect giftshop

& Klevering, Haarlemmerstraat 8, Amsterdam

Close to the Central Station and just at the beginning of the atmospheric Haarlemmerstraat, you can find &Klevering, one of my favorite stores to buy gifts.

They sell a wide range of great cookbooks, pretty crockery and cooking utensils, my favorite tea (Mr. Jones), delicious soaps and other body treats from Marseille, really cute gifts for kids. And it’s the perfect place for contemporary design pieces for your interior. You can find all different renowned brands, but they sell their own collection as well. It’s funny, because only after we bought a &Klevering presse-papier in a small boutique in Paris, I found out about their store nearby my home.

There are two more shops located in Amsterdam, one at the Jacob Obrechtstraat 19a and the other on the Staalstraat 11. And they also have a webshop.  See some of my favorites below..

Hermessence

Most famous for their leather wear, one could easily forget the other items in Hermès’ luxury collection. I’m talking about their breathtakingly delicious perfumes.

I smelled their Hermessence Collection about two years ago and ever since I’m hooked. You can’t compare these fragrances to other perfumes, since they’re truly unique. They’re pure, intense and filled with all kind of scents. The Heremessence Collection, reinvented by Hèrmes perfumer Jean-Claude Eilena, consist of nine different perfumes which sound just as chique as they smell: Rose Ikebana, Osmanthe Yunnan, Brin de Réglisse, Vétiver Tonka, Iris Ukiyoé, Vanille Galante, Poivre Samarcande. Paprika Brasil, Ambre Narguilé.

My favorites are Ambre Narguilé, Poivre Samarcande, Rose Ikebana and Iris Ukiyoé (the latest addition to the collection). All of the scents are unisex and perfect to combine. So I prefer the sensual ambre with a touch of spicy pepper. Or the light and delicate rose with a savor of tangerine and orange blossom.

The Hermessence Collection is only available in Hermès boutiques.  In Holland there are two stores in Amsterdam (PC Hooftstraat 97 and Dam 1) and one in Maastricht (Stationsstraat 34). You can buy the parfum in the regular size bottles (100 ml, 170 Euro), but they also sell gift sets with four different 15 ml bottles (100 Euro). Each of the bottles get their own mini Hermès satchel and they’re put together in a signature orange box, perfect! Buy them together with your lover, best friend, mom or dad, and share, combine and spray the love.

Three in a row

In Amsterdam there are a few big parks. I do like the well-known Vondelpark, but for me it’s always a bit too crowded with drunken homeless people, soggy love couples and too excited dogs and kids. That’s why I prefer the Westerpark. I’m not saying you don’t see these kinds of scenes over there (there’s a kindergarten located inside the park.. just saying), but definitely to a much lesser extent. But why I mostly prefer the Westerpark is because of all the great bars and restaurants you can find there. Located at the Polonceaukade (near the Westergasfabriek) there are three places I’d like to highlight for you.

The perfect place for drinks. In the winter, when there’s a big fire place in the middle of the restaurant, or during the summer, because of their huge terrace outside. It’s great for lunch or dinner, since they serve fine food for fine prices. Oh and yes, sometimes I just go there for desert (sticky toffee pudding, hmm!). When you sit outside, don’t count on a romantic table just for the two of you, since other people might easily join you at one of the bigger tables. Though, I really enjoy the laidback vibe at this place. Another asset: they are almost always open!

Toko MC
Polonceaukade 5

Whenever I walk past this place, there always seem to be some sort of party going on. When you sit outside on their terrace, you can enjoy the Carribean tunes while sipping your modern tropical cocktails. Their interior inside looks amazing, with a coconut wooden floor and blustery wallpaper on the walls. Since the weather turned bad again I didn’t had the chance to have dinner at Toko MC, because yes, I’d prefer to eat my Jamaican, Surinam, Brazilian or Cuban inspired dinner underneath a burning sun to get the full experience. But their menu sure looks promising!

De Bakkerswinkel

This wouldn’t be my list if there wasn’t anything sweet on it too. De Bakkerswinkel, I love it. Located inside a pretty old building you find this spacious, but still very cozy, bakery. There’s also a big terrace outside with big wooden benches. You can go there for breakfast, lunch or high tea, since they're only opened until 5. But please, only decide to order both a brownie and a scone with home-made jam and clotted cream if you’re really hungry, cause it’s heavy! But if you do make the same 'mistake' I made, they have doggybags to take your leftovers with you.. *takes a bite of her brownie*

Petit déjeuner

Gebroeders Niemeijer, nieuwendijk 35, Amsterdam

Do you know where our plans on going to Paris this summer were created? Yup, at Gebroeders Niemeijer. While me and my friend were eating and enjoying our petit pains et croissants avec confiture et beurre, with some freshly squeezed orange juice and a nice cup of tea, we decided we should visit the city of lights for a few days together. This place, and this delicious breakfast, definitely reminds me of Paris (and France in general), expect for one thing: the waiters, they are actually friendly.

I heard a lot of good things about this lunchroom, their patisserie must be to die for. They sell macarons, so I certainly have to visit again. You know, to do some research on French food….  They bake their own bread in the bakery down below the restaurant, which make the whole place smell terribly good. Go there for lunch (baquette with San Daniele, gruyère or manchego Romero), for tea (tart tartin or tartelette au chocolat), for breakfast (pain au chocolat or brioche and some fresh fruit) or for take away. Just go there! (*must warn you: you might want to go to France after you've been here..)

An oasis of rest: the real one

Begijnhof, Spui, Amsterdam

Remember my post about Zara Home as an oasis of rest in the Kalverstraat? Well, I actually forgot that there’s a real oasis of rest in the city center of Amsterdam. I just found out about it a year ago, but now I visit it every once in a while when I feel like taking a break from the bustle of the city. I’m talking about the Begijnhof, a small medieval courtyard located within the Singel of Amsterdam.

On a the street called Spui (next to The American Book Center), there’s a big wooden door, leading to a small corridor which brings you to the courtyard. This entrance has only been here for about a century, since the Begijnhof used to be enclosed by water. It could only be reached through a bridge at the other side of it. It used to be a monastery, but after it had been renovated in 1979 they turned in into homes. This place has a long history. The exact date of foundation isn’t clear, but it’s about 1300. During two big fires (The Great Fires) in 1421 and 1452, a big part of the Begijnhof got destroyed and needed to be rebuilt. In 1578 there was a big revolution in Amsterdam, where the Protestants took the power away from the Catholics and shut down their churches (also the one in the Begijnhof). In the beginning the Catholics came together in one of the houses, later on they decided to (secretly) built another chapel to practice their faith. A lot of things changed since 1700 inside the court, for instance most of the houses were rebuilt with brick walls, but there is still one wooden house left (probably the oldest still existing house in the Netherlands).

Immediately after closing the door behind you, you can feel the peace and tranquility from this yard. You can just walk around en look at the old houses or sit down on a bench and just enjoy the silence. Each time I sit here, I always notice other people also just reading their books or drinking their coffee-to-go, preparing their selves for another day n the city.

Whenever you walk past the entrance at the Spui, just take a little peek inside, I bet you’ll enjoy it. 

Take my bread away

Vlaamsch Broodhuys, Haarlemmerstraat 108, Amsterdam

Last week I finally had lunch at this place. I’d been there before to buy some bread and cakes, but now we’ve made it to their lunchroom. For lunch, you can order one of Dimitri’s Sandwiches, a salad or a quiche. Or you can pick a ‘savory plate’ for two, for people who can’t choose (like me). When you order such a plate, you get a fine combination of their cheeses (like goat cheese and mozzarella), sausages (salami) and salads (with chicken or tuna) and a basket filled with all kinds of bread. We sat there for about 2,5 hours and we kept on eating (okay and chatting and chatting and chatting), while ordering nice latte’s and tea’s. Big asset: you pay just 7,95 Euros per person for a plate like that, which is an incredibly good price for what you get.

While waiting for our lunch we saw a little boy eating a chocolate muffin and we almost stared it off of his plate because it looked so good (and I bet it tasted even better, since he scraped every inch of the paper cup with his fork so he wouldn’t miss a crumb of it). And as much as we wanted to try it for ourselves, our bellies were stuffed after our big lunch. So if you happen to visit it soon, try one for me!

In Amsterdam you can find Het Vlaamsch Broodhuys also at the Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat, the Elandsgracht and the Vijzelstraat. But they also have stores in Utrecht and Rotterdam.

Cupcakes in Amsterdam #2

Beter & Leuk, Eerste Oosterparkstraat 91

The greatest thing about my search for the tastiest cupcakes in Amsterdam is visiting  places where I usually wouldn’t go that easily. For instance my latest finding, the breakfast-/lunchroom and shop Beter & Leuk at the Oosterparkstraat. It’s completely on the other side of the city from where I live, but I read on the internet that they sell Cupies cupcakes, so I really had to go there and try one of their cupcakes.

At Cupies they believe that everyone should enjoy the good stuff in live, so that’s exactly what I did last friday. I settled down in their super cute and cozy boutique and had a delicious vanilla cupcake and a great latte. Definitely a keeper! Loved the sweet taste of the spongy little cake and the vanilla creme was just finger licking good. I really couldn’t choose which one to pick, since they have all these delicious flavors like: chocolate heaven, strawberry fields, toffee break, honey, champagne deluxe (a sparkling champagne buttercream topping) and banana moon. Oh, I have to go back there as soon as possible to try out the other ones!
            Back to Beter & Leuk, because this place deserves some attention on its own. Too bad I just had breakfast and it was a little bit too early for lunch, because their menu looked great. They serve homemade granola with fresh fruit and yogurt, warm sandwiches with goat cheese, tomato and honey or with smoked chicken, avocado, tomato and mayonnaise. Hmm! While I sat there, they were baking carrot cake en chocolate chip cookies, all coming from their own small kitchen, smelling so good!  But  above all, their slogan is: STOP EATING SHIT, EAT GOOD FOOD! So everything you order at Beter & Leuk comes from good suppliers,
serving only honest products (from organic coffee to free range chicken). A real asset for me! 

            

Like I said, their lunchroom is also a shop. They sell great t-shirts, nice jewelry, books and beauty products. All selected on whether they’re nice, but also good for the people, the animals and the environment. I really liked the bags from the Bag Rescue Plan that they sell, great concept!

        For me, Beter & Leuk and their delicious Cupies Cupcakes are definitely worth the detour.

P.s. Do you have a broken heart? Got a bad grade? Feeling down? A.k.a. do you need some serious good food? They also do high tea’s, where you can taste all of their delicious cupcakes, sandwiches and cakes. That múst make you feel better :)

A trip to Little Italy

Walking through the Jordaan last week, I found out that there’s a street in Amsterdam known as Little Italy. There are no white-green-red flags hanging in the streets and you can’t find a mafioso like Ignazio "The Wolf" Lupo, but you do can find a lot of high quality Italian restaurants in this neighborhood. No doubt I had to check out one (or two, three or four..) of the restaurants over there. 

            Restaurant La Perla immediately caught my eye, because of their huge wood oven standing in the middle of the room. And we all know that’s the place where the best pizzas come from! You see, my dad built us a pizza oven in our own garden. Once you’ve tried a pizza coming from that oven, you’ll be a little bit screwed up for the rest of your life: pizza will never be the same again. Maybe it’s just being busy the whole day with making dough, heating up the oven and preparing the sauce and other ingredients, that make the pizza taste so good when you’re eventually able to try a slice, but still, they’re de-li-ci-ous! As you can see on the pictures*, we had a fabulous opening of the pizza season last Sunday, with sun, bubbles and perfect pizzas.
Though the down side of having such great pizzas at home, is that I became a real critical client with high expectations. So when I tell you something is a good pizza, you’ll know for sure it ís a good pizza ;).
          Luckily, La Perla easily passed my test. Their pizzas are great. Perfect sauce, delicious mozzarella (the use buffalo mozarella which is brought to Amsterdam twice a week from the Naples area) and fresh basil leaves. When I ate my pizza, I closed my eyes and imagined myself somewhere in Tuscany, eating that exact same pizza underneath an olive tree, hearing crickets chirp and feeling the heat of the sun on my skin. TYes, they really do serve close-to-Italian-perfection-pizzas.
            Due to fatigue we took dinner home with us, but while waiting I enjoyed reading the Italian Vogue and watching the pizza chef doing a little show for me putting the pizzas in the oven. Next time I’ll be sure to eat my pizza over there, since they also have a nice sort of ‘living room’ with a big shared table. Oh, and I’ll try their tiramisu, it looked temptingly tasty.

Oh and another thing I really like, is that you can order products, like pastas, cheeses and wine, on their website on demand. 

Cupcakes in Amsterdam #1

There are several companies in Amsterdam (all named very originally like Cupcake Heaven, Nina Lucia’s Cupcakes, Shirleys Cupcakes or Super Cupcakes ha-ha) that make cupcakes for companies. Though when I like to order some of their cupcakes, I can only buy a big amount of them (most of the time at least 12). I know, that doesn’t sound like a real problem to me, but you get the point. 

            So I started looking for places like restaurants and cafés where it's possible to just sit down with girlfriends and have a cup of tea and a cupcake or shops where I can buy just a few of them to take home with me. I already mentioned one a while ago here, but there are still more (to discover). So this a start of a set of blog posts about those cupcake places in Amsterdam. I’ll start with one of my favorite ones, the American Bakery. There are still more to come, but if you do happen to know a fine place for cupcakes, I’d really like to know!

Alright, about the American Bakery. This tiny bakery is located at the Eggertstraat 1, next to lunchroom De Drie Graeffjes (a good spot for lunch where you can also order treats from the bakery to eat inside). When you walk in to the bakery, you immediately smell the delicious scent of freshly baked cookies and cakes. Whenever you’re there, they’re always baking. Putting pies in the oven and pulling batches filled with cookies out of it. The owner, or as they call him Dan the Cookieman, comes from Minnesota and he sure did a good job bringing America to Amsterdam. He has a delicious range of cheesecake, carrotcake, red velvet cake, chocolate chipcookies, brownies with dark of white chocolate glazing, muffins with pieces of chocolate, fruits or nuts and of course cupcakes. And not just one flavor, there’s always way too much to choose from. Last time I was there I had a vanilla cupcake with soft and sweet butter cream, topped off with colored sparkles. The texture of the cake was very good, nice and spongy and the cream.. hmm!
            As you can see, my photos are taken from the outside. Not without a reason, I was just sure that I couldn’t go in without buying a cupcake (and I already had one today …)!

  

A matter of taste

Smaak, Prinsenstraat 16, Amsterdam

How come I've never seen this store before? It has got my name written all over it! A beautiful store filled with perfectly designed bags made of soft lambskin in deliciously pretty colors. One bag even more prettier than the other! 

            The owner of the store started a boutique (Leliegracht 16) a few years ago, creating this sort of candy store for woman filled with clothes, bags and other accessories. Eventually, he decided to begin his own brand, working together with Vince Blanchard (who collaborated previously with Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana). The bags are made off high quality material, so I think you still get real value for your money (prices are between 160 to 200 Euros). The simple brand name, Smaak (the Dutch translation of taste) is printed on pretty silver labels hanging on each bag. They gave it an original twist by putting the K in reverse.

            I really couldn't choose which one I liked the best (I actually wanted to take all of them with me), but I know for sure than soon I’ll be proudly wearing a handbag by this Dutch designer.

Taschen, Rue de Buci 2, Paris

The main reason why I’m writing this post is to let you know how super excited I am about the opening of a Taschen store in Amsterdam this summer. I’m a huge fan of their book collection and can’t wait to visit their shop (P.C. Hooftstraat 44).

            Ever since we’ve ran into the Taschen store in Paris a few years ago, I always want to go there whenever I’m in Paris. It’s located in the heart of St. Germain des Pres, at Rue de Buci (a really cozy street filled with a lively open-air market everyday).
            Even though I tried, I never walk out Taschen empty handed. There's always something in that store that I really really really want to buy. I love their design and architecture books, but most of all their great selection of photography books. I already got a few of their books about one of my favorite photographers Robert Doisneau. I just adore everything about his work, so if you don’t know he is, please google him and get enchanted by his romantic, funny and beautiful photographs.

            Still definitely on my wish list are Taschen Paris or/and Taschen New York, an amazing collection of great shopping, restaurant and hotels tips collected in a book filled with pretty drawings and images.

P.s. Got exhausted after shopping at Taschen (or at any other nice boutique at Rue Buci)? Go to the cocktailbar right in front of the store (forgot the name, sorry!) and order yourself a delicious strawberry mojito! 

An oasis of rest

Zara Home, Kalverstraat 66, Amsterdam

Last week my grandmother told me about how the Kalverstraat used to be one of the most expensive (shopping) streets in Amsterdam, just like the PC Hooftstraat is right now. For those of you who know the street, this might be hard to believe. There’s actually only one expensive shop left and that’s Maison de Bonneterie (where they sell real nice jeans!). You do have a few relatively pricy jewelers, but apart from that you only find the regular shops (H&M, River Island, We, Etos etc.) and some real cheap ass (with almost always a sign ‘closing down sale’) stores.
            So whenever I feel like taking a break from this street filled with fake LV bags, fur collars, white boots and too much make-up, I enter the Zara store and take the escalator to the 3th floor, where I hit upon an oasis of rest. You’ll find (*drumrolls*)… Zara Home.
            Inside this light, spacious store you can buy all the stuff you need (or just want) for your home. Glassware, photo frames, towels, scented candles, all nicely arranged on big tables and inside cabinets. Just like their clothing sections on the ground-, first- and second floor, their Home collection also changes every season. While Spring is almost here, the assortment right now exists mainly of cheery colored tableware, linen covered with flowers and bright colored home accessories.
            Too bad, I wasn’t strong enough to resist their deliciously new stuff and treated myself to a new water jug, some glasses and two cute spoons. Aren’t they nice?

Seriously good sandwiches

 B&B Catering Service, Rokin 100, Amsterdam

Last week, I was pleasantly surprised by a new lunchroom. I usually avoid eating in the area around my university because of  the high priced/low quality "touristfood". So my expectations weren’t that high already, but entering the place (and noticing their ugly interior) I literally had to tell myself that I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. At this point you must be wondering why I even bothered eating there... Well, their muffins and other cakes in their window looked absolutely delicious (even though I still don’t understand why they put plants in between them).
            But, more important than the plants between their sweets or their ugly furniture, are the delicious sandwiches they serve. There is a lot of choice and a fine collection of different kinds of bread and sandwich fillings. We ordered two sandwiches to share. One "Italian sandwich" with roast beef, parmesan, sundried tomatoes, pesto and rockets which was truly delicious. The other one with goat cheese, roasted almonds, figs and rockets, was just an experiment of a girl that works there, but it was so good! The two of them make a healthy, tasteful lunch for about 5 Euros per person.
            The next day I stopped by to try one of their muffins, which they call "the best in and around Amsterdam". Normally I would definitely pick one that has some form of chocolate in or on it.  However this time I couldn't resist my curiosity and had to try the Peach & Raspberry variation. I must admit, I think it was the best muffin I've ever ate in Amsterdam! They have 2 other establishments in the city center, one in the Leidsestraat and on the Max Euweplein (facing the Hard Rock café). So, just ignore the appearance of the place and order yourself a delicious sandwich, or two..

Sushi unlimited

Shabu Shabu, Ferdinand Bolstraat 18, Amsterdam

I love sushi, especially when the quality is high and the price is low. Unfortunately most of the time cheap sushi is not that great and you still end up paying about four of five Euros for just a couple of maki’s. Luckily the unlimited sushi formula has come to Holland from overseas and the quality for an all-you-can-eat-sushi-dinner is pretty good! Recently Shabu Shabu opened their first restaurant in Amsterdam. It’s a big place but I really liked the interior and it still feels cozy. For about 23 Euros you can order unlimited sushi for two and a half hours. Though, make sure your eyes aren’t bigger than your stomach, because they charge extra for each piece you order but don’t eat. Shabu Shabu serves Delicious maki, sake and tamago but be sure to try the warm dishes such as springrolls, yaki tori, ebi tempura (fried prawns) and edamama (salted soya beans) too! And don’t forget to order yourself a cold dry Asahi beer, because it will make your dinner taste even better. Itadakimasu! (bon appetit)

           By the way, some other great unlimited sushi places are Sushi Qube and Zumo in Rotterdam, Hasekura in Utrecht and Ask de Chef in Arnhem.

         

Ps. If you feel like making sushi at home, maybe you can try this ;) It’s just a crazy toy, but I think it's very funny.
